DEPARTMENT OF INTERIOR Scholarship Guidelines for Tuition Fees and Travel Grants for National Preservation Institute Seminars
The National Preservation Institute (NPI) is the administering organization for scholarships for the National NAGPRA Program, National Park Service, Department of Interior. NPI will accept EITHER a National NAGPRA Program Scholarship Application Form (www.npi.org/schol-NAGPRA.html) OR an NPI Registration Form (with payment information) (www.npi.org/register.html). All scholarship applications must be received at least six weeks prior to the seminar. Successful applicants will be notified four weeks prior to each seminar. Multiple National NAGPRA Program scholarships are available for NPI seminars listed below. More information on each seminar, including a description and an agenda, can be found by clicking on the seminar title on the NPI web site—www.npi.org/schol-NAGPRA.html. Tribes, Alaska Native villages and corporations, Native Hawaiian organizations, and museums may send up to two participants to any seminar(s) that they apply for. Each applicant must fill out a separate scholarship application. Federally recognized tribes, Alaska Native villages and corporations, and Native Hawaiian organizations that DO NOT have a current NAGPRA Consultation/Documentation grant with dedicated training funds are eligible to receive scholarships to attend any of the following training seminars: • Archaeological Curation and Collections Management Museums with an annual operating budget of $250,000 or less are eligible to receive up to two scholarships for the following training seminars only: • NAGPRA: Determining Cultural Affiliation Eligibility CriteriaScholarship recipients:• Must be a tribal member, a member of an Alaska Native village or corporation, or Native Hawaiian Review ProcessScholarship recipients will be selected based on the fulfillment of eligibility criteria. Notification of awards will be made four weeks prior to each seminar. Travel Grants For qualifying participants a check in the amount of $500 will be made out to the sponsoring organization after completion of the seminar; there are no exceptions to this payment schedule. An organization may receive only one $500 NAGPRA Travel Grant. The organization is responsible for reimbursing travel costs using these funds. The travel grant application is part of the National NAGPRA Program scholarship application—www.npi.org/schol-NAGPRA.html.
